Vlad Bilan, a third-year University of Oregon Student who immigrated to the U.S. from Dnipro, Ukraine, when he was a child, looks out of the window of his apartment. “I had this dilemma where, for the first week when the Ukraine news started coming out, I was checking the news like every single day. After a while, I just kind of cut off checking the news nearly as frequently and then talked to my parents most of the time,” Bilan says.

Remembering the Coast

The University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication annually attend the, “Media in Ghana” six week internship where faculty and students have the opportunity to intern at various media establishments — also traveling to Africa's Coast. Students and faculty come face to face with Africa's enslavement history and its connection to the U.S. from the African perspective.

An old, mountainside village not far from Abdulaziz al-Balushi’s rental home stands in contrast to the modern houses around it. According to al-Balushi, the village has been on Jebel Akhdar for decades and the Omani government has made many attempts to demolish the village and relocate the people living there. He said the government views the village as an eye-sore on their popular tourist attraction, but the people living in the village refuse to leave their home. Photograph by Payton Bruni.
