Highlighting First Generation Graduates During COVID-19

The class of 2020 will not be having a traditional graduation this year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Our Multimedia Producer Meg Matsuzaki spoke with a few first generation seniors to reflect on their accomplishments and milestones.

Behavior Coordinator Lauren Rubin brings Missy,a 10-year-old mastiff who was surrendered to Greenhill after her owner passed away,outside to get some training and socialization. Rubin says that cuddling with the dogs is her favorite part of her job. “It is part of their mental well-being to get attention and so training them is really fun but cuddling them is definitely the most important part,” Rubin says.
Protecting Pets in Perilous Times
When Ivy Cotler’s not cooking in her kitchen or hiking and skiing with friends, most of her free time is spent in her gardens. Since moving to Oregon, she says she’s learned a lot more about gardening from local enthusiasts. “Gardeners are pretty friendly,” Cotler says. “There’s a big gardening community here.”
Cookin’ for Her Community
For Jennifer Ramirez Diaz, playing mariachi music allows her to connect with her Mexican heritage and culture. “Since we’ve been here my whole life, I never thought I would experience that or experience a little part of Mexico,” she says.
A Mariachi Family
Christian Binder peers out of his seventh-story window in Barnhart Hall, the designated quarantine building for students who have either contracted or come into contact with the coronavirus. Binder says he was given one hour to pack his things once his roommate was alerted of his positive test result. “We’re only allowed out between 1 and 3 p.m.,” Binder says. "I'm so ready to get out of here."
Close Quarters
Kory Coleman feeds his two-month-old son, Flinn Coleman, who he hopes to raise in an honest and patient environment. “I want my child to be able to tell me the truth,” he says. “When I told my family the truth, that's when I was able to get clean.”
Riding the Road to Recovery
Christelle Auzas skates at WJ Skatepark in downtown Eugene at dusk. “I used to think skateboarding was this grungy thing,” says Auzas, “but now I see it more like dancing.”
