Hair For All

HAPI Hair Studio recently opened up this spring in Eugene, Oregon, and is working to educate stylists around the state about how to style and treat Black hair and clients. Ethos Multimedia Director Jassy McKinley spoke with these hairstylists and advocates about their overall mission to teach inclusive hairstyling.

Tsunami Books has been slowly pieced together since it first became a bookstore in 1995, with many of the shelves and pieces of furniture either having been donated from Autzen stadium, local school gymnasiums or handmade by Landfield himself as the shop’s owner. One of his favorite things about the shop pre-pandemic was hosting mini concerts and poetry slam nights on the stage near the piano.

Trevor Walraven, a former inside student who grew up in the prison system after being incarcerated at the age of 14, says his first Inside-Out course changed his life. “There was a recognition for me that, in the decade leading up to the courses, I had been dehumanized in a lot of different ways,” Walraven says. “I didn’t realize it because I grew up in that system.”
To See Us First As Humans
Anna Nguyen, one of the only two female players in the University of Oregon’s esports program, says she’s experienced the gaming community’s toxicity firsthand and has also heard experiences from other women. Nguyen believes the anonymity that’s available to people when playing with strangers online is a prominent reason for this. “I think a big part of why people are toxic toward women in gaming and also online in general is because they don’t need to put their reputation on the line or worry about suffering the consequences,” Nguyen says.

Trials for track athletes and local restaurant owners
A burnt quiltwork of tree farms and public land blankets the hills above Vida, Oregon. Recent studies, like the 2017 report by Harold Zald and Cristopher Dunn, show that younger stands of conifers often burn more severely than older stands, poking holes in the age-old timber narrative of fire-prevention by logging and replanting.  A fire that consumes an entire young conifer patch may only reach the trunks of the surrounding older, and more fire-resistant stands, as happened here during the Holiday Farm Fire.

Hurt says the discussion-based structure of the Clark Honors College doesn’t work for everyone. Joe Scott, a Siletz tribal member and educator on prescribed burns, stands next to a segment of his lawn he plans to burn when conditions are right. According to Scott, people oftentimes equate fire with damage, but that isn’t always the case. “If your house burns up, it’s easy to forget that you cooked food in there. You have a good relationship with fire until it takes something seriously cherished by you away,” Scott says.
