Approaching the taco stand you are immediately greeted with the smell of seasoned meat and a friendly, “Hello. How are you doing today?” This is Maria Sanchez, owner and chef of Cuñado’s Taqueria, which she runs with husband Miguel Ventura. Sanchez and Ventura started the cart in 2008 when they needed extra work and decided to make a living cooking the food they love.
Originally Cuñado’s Taqueria stood behind the couple’s place of work, but the cart’s visibility was low and so the couple decided to relocate to a spot along Highway 99. Ever since, business has been booming. Regular costumer Roberto Rodriguez says he likes Cuñado’s Taqueria because it has strong flavors and a fresh taste. “I love this place. They cook the food more authentically,” he adds.
Currently there are no plans for expansion, as Sanchez and Ventura already have a great customer base they don’t want to lose. While they have many items on the menu, such as quesadillas, tortas, and tostadas, the most popular dishes are tacos and burritos. The price ranges from $1.00 for tacos to $5.00 for a burrito or quesadilla, and the cart is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Every meal is made fresh in the cart, including the habañero sauce and salsa that Sanchez and Ventura make on their own.
With Cinco de Mayo tomorrow, Sanchez and Venture expect to have more business but have no special plans to recognize the Mexican holiday. Either way, the cart’s delicious meals satisfy any appetite and the large portions make it well worth the money.
