With eggs hidden and baskets ready, off they went. Over one hundred dogs began their search for 3,000 eggs on Saturday, April 23. As the dogs sniffed, the owners followed, carrying a basket for the eggs their pups found. Some dogs, however, were talented enough to carry their own baskets.
Greenhill Humane Society‘s Third Annual Doggone Easter Egg Hunt took place at Eugene’s Meadow View School. With over 300 people accompanied by their dogs, it was the biggest turnout in the event’s history.
“We see hundreds of dogs come together,” said Denise Brittain, the Community Outreach Manager at Greenhill. “It’s just a nice way for people to come out and spend time with their dogs, with other people’s dogs, interact with other animal owners, and just have a good time and support our organization.”
In order to compete on Saturday, owners paid five dollars per participating dog. This is one of Greenhill’s major fundraising events—a vital service since the shelter receives no money from the government or state.
For many owners, the Doggone Easter Egg Hunt was not their first time interacting with Greenhill. Two years ago Carrie Watson visited Greenhill to adopt her two dogs—Gracie and Buddy, ages four and seven. Katelyn Mormon, a volunteer at Greenhill, also brought her dogs, Sonny and Noelle, to the event. When asked about her work with Greenhill, Mormon replied: “It’s a great job. I love it and it’s so much fun. It’s great spending time with these dogs.”
Greenhill’s next event, Rent-a-Pup, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25. Ten to twelve puppies from Greenhill will be brought to the UO campus for students to rent for the day for a cost of five dollars.
