Like the blooming of flowers, the chirping of birds, and the watering of allergy-sensitive eyes, the Spring Student Dance Concert (SSCD) marks the return of the season to the University of Oregon.
“[The SSCD] has been a UO Department of Dance tradition for as long as the department has existed,” SSCD Director Shannon Mockli says. “It exists to provide students the experience of self-producing a concert.”
This year’s show offers a wide variety of choreography, ranging from tap to one dance that involves video. However, the ultimate goal of the show, Mockli says, is to provide UO dance students real-life experience while earning their majors. “It is really a way to not only show off the talent of our dancers as technicians and artists, but also to equip them with necessary knowledge to work in the dance field after they graduate,” she says. “SSDC requires a lot of extra work on their part, but it teaches them skills for self-producing in the future.”
The show runs at 8pm Thursday, May 13 through Saturday, May 15 at the Doughtery Dance Theater. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for seniors and students with ID.
