According to Tendick, all of the photos embody Nicholaus, or Nick, with his big laugh or being with his family. “Nick had a big heart. I remember he came back one night without shoes and a shirt because there were kids outside that were cold. He would literally give the shirt off his back. That’s the kind of person he was,” Tendick says.

Anna Nguyen, one of the only two female players in the University of Oregon’s esports program, says she’s experienced the gaming community’s toxicity firsthand and has also heard experiences from other women. Nguyen believes the anonymity that’s available to people when playing with strangers online is a prominent reason for this. “I think a big part of why people are toxic toward women in gaming and also online in general is because they don’t need to put their reputation on the line or worry about suffering the consequences,” Nguyen says.

Practicing these moves with classmates felt a little weird at first to Miller, but eventually she became more comfortable. “It was always very helpful and always an encouraging atmosphere,” Miller says. “You didn’t feel like someone was yelling, ‘Ah! You did that wrong.’”
