At any given time in a college town, there is bound to be a hungry college student searching for a snack. At the University of Oregon, there are many options for students to satisfy their cravings. One healthier choice is available just off campus at the Campus Sub Shop.
Cathie and Stan Garrett have been serving up classic subs and frozen yogurt in the same green and white diner for 23 years. They were looking into remodeling when they heard about the start-up of self-serve frozen yogurt shops in California.
At the YoCream Frozen Yogurt Company in Portland, the Garretts explored their options. They noticed how much fun people were having creating their own special masterpieces out of yogurt. After many special requests for flavors like Original Tart, the Garretts decided they were ready to up-grade.
Back in Eugene, they bought three new yogurt machines and remodeled their topping bar to bring self-serve to the campus community.
Step 1: Grab your cup
Yogurt Central has three sizes of cups for those who are just trying it out, those who know they like it, and those who want to take a big tub of it home. The two smaller sizes cost 40 cents an ounce, and the larger size costs $7.00 even.
Step 2: Pick your flavor
The first self-serve challenge is picking a flavor. There are always a fruit flavor, a vanilla, a chocolate, and a sorbet available, but the flavors change each week. Check out the Yogurt Central Facebook page for the week’s flavors. Lots of the flavors are non-fat or low fat, some have no sugar added, and there are usually gluten free options.
Stan’s favorite flavor is Cookies-n-Cream, while Cathie’s favorite is Cake Batter.
“It reminds you of when your mom cooked and you’re licking the batter whisk,” she says. “It gives you a warm, comfort feeling.”
The yogurts contain live and active cultures, meaning this sweet treat is healthy too.
Step 3: Add your toppings
The second challenge is deciding how to top your masterpiece. With over 50 toppings to choose from the combinations are infinite!
“You can indulge in a sweet candy topping or stay healthy with fruit,” says Cathie.
Step 4: Weigh and pay
“I really like this trend,” says Ali King, UO sophomore. “Generally I like getting the tart, a fruit topping, and chocolate chips.”
Fall is in the air, but if you’re looking for a sweet cool treat on a sunny afternoon be sure to check out the Campus Sub Shop.
