Story & Multimedia by Anais Keenon
Disability is pervasive, and it’s everywhere. For some people, it’s hidden. For others, it’s always out there for the world to see. But what is it like to live with a disability at the University of Oregon? Sure, some people know about the Americans With Disabilities Act. Others could tell you there’s a legal obligation to provide accommodations. But what about the rest of it? The daily struggles, the attitudes on campus and at large, the underlying politics of getting accommodations? That’s usually just noise in the background, not easily discernible for the majority of the population.
This video is not an attempt to cover all of the complex issues surrounding disability—that would take months, maybe years, to explain—but the hope is that this video can provide a glimpse into a relatively inaccessible world for the able-bodied, a glimpse into the lives of people with disabilities at the UO.
Subtitles are provided to make this story accessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
