According to Tendick, all of the photos embody Nicholaus, or Nick, with his big laugh or being with his family. “Nick had a big heart. I remember he came back one night without shoes and a shirt because there were kids outside that were cold. He would literally give the shirt off his back. That’s the kind of person he was,” Tendick says.

Becca Thomas was drawn to the Veterans Center to connect with other students who have military backgrounds. Thomas’ father was deployed for 18 years, 10 of which were active duty. And even though she hasn’t served herself, she was still welcomed with open arms.
